Have you ever really smacked your hand, stubbed your toe, or some similarly klutzy exploit? Sometimes, people curse in response. Sometimes, people curse loudly. I took a deep breath in, closed my eyes, and veeeeery slowly let my breath out. My husband found me sitting there, eyes squinched closed, and began, in his loving way, to tease me. I saw his attempt to distract me and, because I preferred to focus my energy on controlling my pain, I very gently, calmly and quietly responded that I would knee him in the balls if he did not stop. He stifled a laugh and said that was the most zen threat he’d ever received. Then, with the same voice that would guide a meditation, he said, “Imagine, you’re walking on a beach. The smell of the salty air, the way breeze feels as it blows through your hair, the sound made by waves of agony after being kneed in the balls.” I snorted, then laughed. 1 point for my husband.
